  • 1 in 10 children are sexually abused before their 18th birthdays
  • Nearly 70% of all reported sexual assaults (including assaults on adults) occur to children ages 17 and under
  • Approximately 35% of the victims of sexual abuse are age 11 or younger
  • Most children never report the abuse
  • One survey showed that fewer than 30% of parents have ever discussed sexual abuse with their children
  • 8 Darkness to Light trainings resulted in 387 adults becoming Stewards of Children
  • 44 children died from abuse in Louisiana in 2013.

Information from a report from the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, prepared by the National Children’s Alliance (May 2010):

  • The youngest children had the highest rate of victimization, with children between ages birth to 1 years having the highest rates of victimization at 21.7 per 1,000 children of the same age group in the national population.  More than half of the child victims were girls (51.3%) and 48.3% were male children.
